NM: Film Openings Research

Film 1: Reservoir Dogs

  • The Beginning of the clip there is the use of non-digetic sound, where a voice over has been used to create tension and effect.
  • This is the followed by the soundtrack that plays as we are introduced to all the characters, which may be a good use to have in our project as this can create a link between cast and audience.
  •  Close up shots of each character, with a paused shot so the audience has time to see the characters face and establish this ‘relationship’
  • Long shot is used after all the characters have been unveiled; this shows the group as a whole. This could be a useful effect to include in our film opening to show a scene or the size of a group.
  • Lastly the use of prosthetic to sure blood and ‘gore’ which entices the audience to find out what happens next.
21 Jump Street:

  •  Fast cutting rate with is used to show the action and increases interest in the clip, which will make people want to watch the rest of the film.
  • The credits are in a big bold font written in capitals, this again adds to the action and loudness of the clip.
  • The use of explosions are dramatic and increase intensity, this is good to use in any opening clip however it’s hard to achieve the right look on a tiny budget
  • The loud soundtrack with minimal amounts of dialogue is very well done and keeps the film suspicious and entertaining.
  •  The use of props and actions make the audience want to watch the rest of the film as they include the 3 things that is proven to captivate audiences, which are sex, cars and violence.
Se7en:
  • The use of shadow going across the screen builds up tension and suspense which adds the effect of the thriller genre.
  • Extreme close ups, which use a pull focus where the view is blurred and eventually sharpens in on the object is creative and a good way to lead in to a film.
  • Diegetic sounds - screams, creaking, pages turning, echoes.
  • low key lighting.
  • 'Creepy' props.
  • Lettering in white on a black background.
